THIS SITE IS THE OFFICIAL SOURCE TO OBTAIN ALL RECREATIONAL PERMITS ON FORT McCOY. ALL INDIVIDUALS PARTICIPATING IN RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES ON FORT MCCOY MUST HAVE A FORT MCCOY ISPORTSMAN ACCOUNT USING THIS WEBSITE.
CANTONMENT ARCHERS ONLY: All Cantonment Archery harvests are required to be verified by Law Enforcement (DES) until further notice. To make harvest verification easier, please complete the following steps:
(1) Photograph harvest with time stamp
(2) Record GPS location of field dressing site
(3) Contact DES Police Dispatch at 608-388-2266 to coordinate a meeting with a Law Enforcement Officer for verification.
ATTENTION ALL RECREATIONISTS:
(1) New Restricted Area in Training Area A-1: This restricted area, in the northern half of A-1, has been identified as having Unexploded Ordnance. Click here for more information and map.
(2) Trapping Starts 14 Oct.: Fort McCoy trapping season is quickly approaching (14 OCT.) and hunters and recreationalists may encounter traps or trapped animals in the field. Trapping is an important furbearer population management tool to ensure furbearer populations are kept at socially acceptable levels and to ensure population health by maintaining population levels below the habitat’s carrying capacity. Fort McCoy hunters and recreationists must keep in mind that no person may interfere with lawful, permitted trapping with the intent to prevent the taking of a wild animal. Impeding lawful trappers, stealing or tampering with lawfully placed traps, stealing or tampering/shooting of trapped animals, among other actions, may constitute unlawful interference.
Upcoming Dates and Additional Notices:
* 1 October - Hunters Choice Approval (HCA) Application Deadline: HCA applications are available with a deadline date of 1 October. HCA permit application is only available for those who were awarded the 2023 Nine Day Gun-Deer permit.
* 17 October at 10AM - 2023 Gun-Deer Bonus Antlerless Tags: A limited number of Gun-Deer Bonus Antlerless Tags will be available for online purchase October 17th at 10AM. Bonus tags will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis through your iSportsman account at a cost of $12. One per customer. 2023 Archery Bonus Tags - SOLD OUT
* Help Stop CWD in Monroe County: CWD has been found in Monroe County, click the link to get more information on locations for deer carcass dumpsters, CWD sampling sites, and a deer donation program. Its up to the sportsman to help slow the spread of CWD by disposing of carcasses responsibly and testing your harvested deer. Hunters can also harvest additional deer (outside of Fort McCoy only) if you have an unused Wisconsin harvest authorization, deer can always be donated to cooperating butchers to help local food pantries. Click here for flyer. Only harvest authorizations issued by Fort McCoy are valid on the installation, state issued harvest authorizations are NOT valid on Fort McCoy property.
* Firearm Registration (New Rules Coming): This will apply to all new and current firearm registrants.
The process for firearm registration will be changing in the near future and some of the changes have gone into effect already.
Changes include: individuals possessing a firearm on Fort McCoy must have a Fort McCoy Form 433-1 (Firearms Registration Record) on their person documenting each weapon (i.e. must have this form prior to hunting); to ensure ample time for processing the Fort McCoy Form 433-1, all firearm registration forms should be submitted 30 days before you plan to bring the firearm onto the installation; all individuals registering a firearm will undergo a NCIC-III background check; when not registering the firearm in person, a copy of a valid government photo ID must accompany the registration form; and, current firearm registrants have 180 days after the approval of the firearm registration policy to have the NCIC-III background check completed. Currently the Visitors Control Center is processing new firearm registrations and proceeding with the NCIC-III background checks. Please keep checking the iSportsman website for any updates or information that we receive in regard to the new firearm registration policy. Firearm Registration forms may also be downloaded from iSportsman (under Regulations tab) or picked up and turned in at the Visitor Control Center (Bldg. 35) located by the Main Gate during normal business hours or at the Main Gate after normal business hours or during the weekend. Firearms are NOT allowed in the Cantonment Area.

Hunting, Fishing, Trapping & Firewood Cutting
Welcome to Fort McCoy. Do you enjoy the outdoors?
Fort McCoy offers hunting, fishing, and trapping opportunities to military (active and retired) and their dependents, government employees, and the general public. All participants must have the appropriate Fort McCoy permit and State of Wisconsin licenses before they are allowed to hunt, fish, or trap on Fort McCoy.
Revenue generated from the sale of hunting, fishing, and trapping permits is used for the management of fish and wildlife habitat and populations on Fort McCoy.
Much of Fort McCoy's 60,000 acres is naturally well-suited for wildlife. The majority of the land on Fort McCoy is divided into 82 training areas totaling 45,648 acres, which are available for hunting. Harvest and biological data is collected to monitor wildlife populations and wildlife health.
Fort McCoy has 10 installation lakes and impoundments and approximately 71.2 miles of coldwater streams and tributaries. The majority of the streams are Class I trout water maintaining naturally reproducing brook and brown trout. The impoundments on Fort McCoy cold water streams provide a variety of uses for recreation, military training, and habitat for fish and wildlife.
Firewood cutting is allowed on Fort McCoy to help remove dead and downed wood from the training areas. Two permit categories are available: the daily permit costs $10 and allows cutting and hauling firewood for one calendar day, the monthly permit costs $50 and allows cutting and hauling firewood for 30 consecutive days. Income generated through firewood permit sales is deposited into a Department of Army account and used to fund forest management activities.
Accessing Fort McCoy: Anyone participating in any activity (hunting, fishing, trapping, and non-hunting/fishing) must register/create an account using this iSportsman system. This is a one-time registration. If you forget your username/permit number or password/personal identification number (PIN), contact the Permit Sales Office (PSO) to get your account credentials reset instead of creating an additional account. An active email address in your account will allow you to reset a forgotten password directly through iSportsman. Users must then use their iSportsman account during check-in/check-out while participating in hunting, scouting, trapping, and Non-Hunting/Non-Fishing activities on Fort McCoy. Your iSportsman account permit number (Login Id #) will serve as your Fort McCoy customer identifier through iSportsman and must be used when checking into a hunting or trapping activity.
Anglers are not required to check-in/check-out, but must still check the Game Line daily to ensure the area they wish to access is open.
A Fort McCoy iSportsman Annual Access Pass: The annual Ft McCoy Access Pass is free. The Annual Access Pass is required for ALL activities to include hunting, fishing, trapping, and is required for non-hunting/non-fishing activities such as scouting, dog walking, hiking, berry picking, etc. All recreational users need to update their account annually by adding the current license year iSportsman Annual Access Pass. The iSportsman Annual Access pass is valid from March 1 through the last day in February each year. The Annual Access Pass serves as the permit for non-hunting/non-fishing activities. The Annual Access Pass is not required for non-hunting/non-fishing activities within the Pine View Campground and Whitetail Ridge Areas. The requirement for an Annual Access Pass is waived for anglers during the WDNR Free Fishing weekends in January and June.
To hunt, fish, or trap Fort McCoy requires an iSportsman Annual Access Pass, the appropriate Fort McCoy hunting, fishing, or trapping permit, and the appropriate State of Wisconsin license(s) and stamp(s).
Children under the age of 16 are not required to have an iSportsman account or iSportsman Annual Access Pass when accompanying an adult iSportsman permit holder. An iSportsman account and iSportsman Annual Access Pass are required if the child, any age, intends to fish and maintain a separate bag limit. An iSportsman account and iSportsman Annual Access Pass are required if the child, age 10-15, intends to hold their own hunting or trapping permit. All recreational users need to update their account annually by adding the current license year iSportsman Annual Access Pass. The iSportsman Annual Access Pass is valid from March 1 through the last day in February each year. An iSportsman Annual Access Pass serves as the permit for non-hunting/fishing recreational activities outlined in the hunting regulations.
